I’m a computer programmer, currently living in Central Illinois with my wife and two dogs. I’m 48 years old. Married for 28 years. I grew up in a Baptist home in a small Southern Missouri town. I gave up on Christianity in my mid-twenties when I started thinking and reading the Bible and couldn’t make sense of it all. It took about 20 years to make the transition to where I am now. I tried Deism, Paganism, Buddhism, New-age, etc. I even went through the “What the Bleep do We Know?” stage of “woo-woo-ism” before finally concluding that there was no reason to believe that there was an omnipotent being out there watching over me. The transition for was long, difficult, and purely unintentional. I tell people that this is just where my honest thinking and searching led me, and I’m happier now than I’ve ever been.
I would encourage anyone who is keeping their non-belief a secret to let their voice be counted with the rest of us if at all possible. However I also understand that not every one is able to do so because of fears of physical or emotional repercussions. What ever you decide, know that you are not alone, and there is a friendly community on the internet to give you support.
