I had to explain this to my daughter the night of the bombing. She’s almost 5 (in a few months) and old enough to be told about bad things that happen in our world. She saw it on the news and wanted to know what it was. I explained that some bad people wanted to hurt others to make a point. I told her the people that got hurt and those that died weren’t guilty of anything… they just wanted to cheer on people in a race. I reminded her that her mommy and daddy try to help in situations like this and that we were going to raise money to help the victims recover and worry less about medical bills and financial struggles associated with events like this.
She walked out of the room, without saying a word, and came back with $1.00 from her piggy bank, and declared, “Daddy, I want to help.” I cried, hugged her, and thanked her for being a wonderful, caring, empathetic little girl. If my 4 and a half year old can spare a dollar for people in need, how much can you give?
We all know by now what happened in Boston. Over 150 people were injured and 3 died. We want to help. We helped raise over $25,000 for the victims of the Sandy Hook Massacre, in Newtown, CT. We decided to do it again. “Atheists Giving Aid” exists to respond in tragedies like this and provide a resource for non-believers (and others) to give money that will make it to the victims and their families without passing through ANY religious affiliated organizations. You can safely give us your money and know that we attach no religious messages or dogmas to it. We just want to help.
Americans are resilient. We’ll be ok. But, bills still have to be paid. This is where you come it. Give what you can. Share this page. Let people know they can give here. We are actively pursuing our 501(c)3 status so your donations ARE tax deductible. Help those affected by this while also showing that atheists care as much or more than any religious group out there. We don’t give money to churches every week, so dig deep in your pockets for this cause and show Boston that atheists can give aid when needed too.
As money comes in, we will update the donation wall so you can see how this fund is doing. The fund will stay active until May 31st.
Boston Atheists and the Secular Coalition for America (Massachusetts Chapter) has officially co-sponsored this campaign. They pledged $500 and will be doing the local groundwork to help up get these funds to the victims and their families. Thanks to Zachary Bos and all the people that help make the Boston area a great place for non-believers to live.
The Humanist Community at Harvard is also chipping in, as they do have a community member who has been directly affected and will need funds. Thanks to Greg Epstein who is out doing the memorials, Chris Stedman who decided we should connect fundraisers, Sarah Chandonett, and the folks at Harvard Humanists.
