Former Religious Affiliation: Baptist

My story: I was raised to believe in god and I was a very devout christian through most of my youth and early adulthood. Beginning in my late teens and early twenties, I started to study the bible in more depth than I had before. As a result of this, I realized that even if god truly did exist, I would never want to serve him. It took me a while to understand why it was important to “come out” and be open about my disbelief, but once I did, I felt much better about myself. I no longer felt that I had to hide who I truly was and I appreciated the people who accepted me for that much more than I ever have.  I am also very happy to be a part of something which I feel is going to change the way people think about things. This is history in the making! More and more atheists are coming out and demanding changes in our societies. My life now is so much more fulfilling than when I was a christian or a closeted atheist. You are not alone! It is okay to be atheist.

Good for you. You are on the right path, the path to becoming a “true human being”. Always remember that Morality is doing what is right regardless of what you are told, but Religion is doing what you are told regardless of what is right. I wish I had been as young as you are when I finally came out as an atheist, but I was not as brave …or perhaps as smart as you are. I came out when I was in my early thirty s, I was 45 before I finally got the internet and found out that I was not as alone as I had thought. All things considered, you have a tremendous head start on living a life where you can feel acceptance. I will be 51 next month, and it feels great to not be in the closet anymore. Remember to study hard, especially in science, we need more Moral Atheist Scientists in this world to help over come the damage done by those who believe that god has given them the earth to rape and pillage. My faith is in young people like you to make this world a better place.

    Hey Erin,

I came across the WeAreAthiesm site and your video happened to be at the top of the queue. I was really moved by your thoughtful comments. Thank you so much! It was inspiring and heart-warming to know that there are so many many people out there with such diverse backgrounds who share a common love of rational secular thought. You’ve inspired me to be more open about my own beliefs. Thank you again and best wishes!
