Story:
I’m a father of five, husband of 27+ years, computer geek, animal lover, community activist, Humanist, Unitarian Universalist…. and an out-of-the-closet Atheist. I don’t fit many of the typical atheist stereotypes – I’ve got a loving, long-term, and successful marriage, I have many kids, and I am a happy person. I live in the Bible Belt, but I wear my atheism with pride. I’m non-confrontational – but I don’t run away from a discussion, either. I answer questions fully and respectfully with the hopes of a) disarming their defenses, and b) planting a “Seed of Rationalism” in them that, maybe, will grow into a freethinker one day (yeah, I’m an optimist too
). I would say to those who are struggling with coming out – be sure of yourself and be proud – you have NOTHING to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.

Nicely done, good sir! Eloquent and to the point.
I too was raised in a Southern Baptist environment and still live in the South. Fortunately Florida is more open-minded than the “Deep” South, so that I can easily live openly as an atheist. The fact that I’m 65 also means that I don’t have to care what anyone thinks of me anymore. *chuckle*
I give a lot of credit to the young ones who come out early. To be smart enough to see through the illusion of religion as a teen (or sometimes even younger) is amazing …but then to have the courage to openly defy the thinking of their family, friends, teachers, and employers, that is awesome!
This website is a wonderful idea. People should know that they are not alone, “bad/evil,” or crazy. Although most of us simply can’t go back to superstitious nonsense once we have seen it for what it is, it’s nice to have the support of like-minded folks.
Wishing you all the best!
