Abortion, Philosophy, and Godlessness: Part 3, the Argument from Rights

Some people make the claim that all human beings have rights. This being the case, they go on to say that to abort an embryo is to violate that human being’s right to life. Thus, they conclude, it is wrongful to practice abortion. I find great problems with this line of thinking. So, for part three, I wanted to discuss the issue of rights. Previously we discussed my belief that what matters about someone is not their mere humanity (in terms of their being biologically human) but their personhood, which comes about subsequent to their humanity. Human-being, under the proper conditions, gives...

A Thought Experiment About Personhood

This is a mini-post related to a (much) longer post discussing the argument from future deprivation. Briefly, the argument supposes that the ending of human life is wrong fundamentally because of its denying them of a future filled with the sorts of experiences that make a person’s life meaningful. Thus, according to the argument from future deprivation, aborting a fetus is wrong because it deprives a human life of its future. Governor Brownback Meets with Atheists!

Yesterday I met with Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas.  Well… Adam Brown, Cole Morgan, Fred Heeren, Michaelyn Everhart and I. We met at my apartment complex and piled into Adam’s car and headed for Topeka, KS. We were all a bit nervous and were trying to figure out what to say, how to say it, and whether or not certain issues should even be raised. We decided on Abortion, Science Education, and giving atheists a seat “at the table”. Let’s break this down a bit so you know what we mean: Abortion: Michaelyn and I were charged with the task of helping Gov. Brownback to see the...
