I was religious for most of my youth, despite some serious doubts.  The doubts were never really dealt with head-on, instead, they were brushed under whatever carpet was handy at the time.  Through a long process of study and thinking, I gradually weened myself off of religion and preferred to pursue doubts that could be discussed, debated, tested and proven.
